TEMPTATION OF JALAN IPOH

I had been to this Jalan Ipoh Char Kueh Teow (“CKT”) stall this year twice, once with fei chai gang, and once with Ed, but both times, unsuccessful. A check with the stationary shop owner, opposite the CKT Stall, the family had gone overseas for a little vacation. I didn’t know their vacation lasted a few months’ long!

Since everyone believes that, bad luck always comes in three, I was reluctant at first to try my luck again tonight. Mun Yee and I had just gone out from the gym (yeah.. there goes the hard work.. down the drain) and contemplating of what to have for our late dinner. We have difficulty deciding whether should we have nasi lemak antarabangsa in Kampung Baru or the not-so-sure-got-or-not CKT in Jalan Ipoh.

Mun Yee insisted on the CKT as she had not tried before and said, if the stall is not open, we could always have dim sum at Mee Bon.

The stall that went missing in Bermuda Triangle..

So, we went.. and.. there was light at the end of the road! Indeed! After a few months of craving, I finally get to savour the oily CKT with chu yao char (lard)!! Mun Yee is my lucky star!! Muax muax!

This stall had been there.. for as long as I could remember. I remember I had it before with James and my ex colleagues, Ms Tambi and gang. This stall is run by siblings. You have two brothers who look alike and a sister – who looked drugged most of the time, and they converse to you only in Hokkien. Even if you speak to them in Cantonese, they will reply you in Hokkien. I am proud to be a Hokkien Lang!

It is situated right after Plaza Pengkalan (the hideous-looking orange colored building in Jalan Ipoh), in between the Pondok Polis and Mee Bon. Right after the Pondok Polis, just keep to the left and find parking, or you could take risks and turn left on the first junction after the Pondok Polis. The stall perched at the end of the pavement, opposite a stationary shop in Jalan Tiong. There used to be a stall selling fried popiahs to complement the CKT, but tonight, the stall is not open. Maybe they have gone for vacation too.

The sinful CKT with Lard

This CKT comes with the usual cockles, tau geh, prawns, eggs, green color vege, but this one has the extra punch with the chu yao char. Mamamia!

Of course, I almost forgotten about the other famous sister of the CKT, the curry laksa, till I saw people practically licking their bowls.

The equally evil sister, the curry laksa

We each ordered a bowl of curry laksa mee hoon-mee, shared a plate of CKT and two drinks. The usual drinks that come with the bowls of goodies are sugar cane juice, chrysanthemum tea, or Pat Chi Chou. All for only RM11.

As we savoured the sinful and oily curry laksa and CKT, it rained suddenly. We were grateful that we decided to sit at the corridor of row of shops, rather than in the open when we first came. Did I mention that Mun Yee is my lucky star??

We talked about our family and other stuffs while waiting for the rain to stop before hitting home. I guess our tummies would be smiling from ear to ear tonight as we sleep.

The CKT is NOT that good la..it’s normal. But the laksa is good.

For foor CKT in Jalan Ipoh, head over to Taman Kok Lian. Landmark is THE STORE. Look for Restoran BAN LEE. Opposite BAN LEE there’s a row of stalls. Look for PRAWN MEE. Sit down. Order prawn mee and CKT. CKT is only nice when it’s fried by the MAN. If the man is not around, order prawn mee only. Also must try the ‘leong sui’ next to their stall. Order “luk mei” or “6 mei” . Nice. Kthxbai.

Other king-chau places to eat inc, tai-shee-tau (big-tree stump), la-cha-hong (dirty alley), the road-side store near swiss garden in bb selling mee tikus…but standard sudah turun-la; on the same road as tikus also got BBQ pork place and CKT of the famous BB CKT, both available for lunch. Then there is a Campbell beefball noodle place, a fish porridge stall near HSBC also at the same place got a minced beef noodle joint but for lunch only…..eh lost count….sudah lapar-ler. Cheers!

Kuzco: Will sample the one you just suggested in due course. Heh.

Emma: It is only open at night, by then, you were probably in some tuition centre or home.

Ann: It is actually famous for the curry mee. The CKT is not that bad either.

Kitjar: FF, KLCC. I am about to terminate membership now..

keatix: The curry mee is good. Don’t miss it. Eat it before your doc advise you against it. Hah.

Yuin: Good things come to those who wait?

cameljoe: Can see that you are you a fellow glutton too?? He he.

How come I dun remember eating this CKT? It must not have been that memorable lah!
james | Homepage | 09.30.05 – 9:40 am | #

Kuzco: No wonder lah. In the end, it was the druggy woman who came to take order. Ha ha ha! The two brothers are morons.

James: Coz, I think we ate the curry mee with the girl that you shared with the Singaporean. You remember the girl, not the noodle.
