CLOSER TO HOME
A lot of friends been asking me how the new job is. What made me change my job? Location? Better pay? No more handsome guys in the office? (Well, there is NEVER a handsome guy (erm.. except for one guy who drives a honda civic back in TCC and oh yes, the expatriates I dealt with) in my line of work - my previous job is dominated by spinsters) Shitty boss?
The answer is: Location. I love my ex boss, Sugar, very much.
The change of job came at the right time – just after the petrol price hike. I would save a few hundred ringgit per month!
Well, it has been the first week at work and I am already regretting it a bit. Not because of anything – just that the things were not properly hand over as the previous assistant left in a huff. Filing system totally went hay wired. I couldn’t seem to find things for my boss which left me really frustrated. Anyway, I hope I could catch up soon. The names of the projects, the jargons, the technical stuffs and the worse: compiling board papers – I had taken my previous clerks for granted. This time no clerks. I am on my own! Must be karma! Godamnit.
I used to undermine what secretaries do and always think that secretaries are always free - hanging on the phone 24/7, painting her finger nails, slutting with the bosses, parroting "do you want coffee, tea or me?" etc.. but hell no... it's a difficult job - you have to remember a lot of things, especially if you are reporting to some big guns in the company. I guess I have a lot to learn.
Getting used to new environment will take time. The thing that caught me by surprise is the “Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang” anthem being played every morning right on the dot at 8.30 a.m., follow by the company’s song and the getting off work, AGAIN. I was taken by surprise on the first day as my cubicle is situated near the speaker. I thought whose handphone is it?? So damn loud!! Haha!
My boss has to explain himself whenever someone calls him right at 8.30 am or 5.30 pm. Everyone is practically shouting over the phone whenever the song is being played. Quite annoying if you tell me.
All lights would be off by 1 pm. Which is good – coz it tells you the time to go for lunch. Geez! I thought there was no electricity on the first day at work.
There are many perks working near home.
1) Extra one hour of sleep
2) Don’t have to drive in the frenzy jam
3) I have personal chauffer to office (my sister)
4) Home cooked lunch (don’t have to fret on what to eat for lunch) made by love (mom’s – got this phrase from Takeshi)
5) Comfortable cat nap (not in my cubicle – but lie flat on my bed for 15 mins during lunch time!)
6) Got home by 6 pm
7) By 7 pm, I have taken my shower and had my dinner and sitting in front of the tv or my laptop for leisure
8) Get to see the screaming kids, getting ready for school in the mornings
9) Sometimes, I don’t even spent a single cent in a day
10) Mom seems to be very pleased to see me stuck at home.
However, working near home had turned me into a yellow face woman. Instead of loitering in Kinokuniya, KLCC after work to beat the jam like I used to, now I am loitering in Selayang Mall, getting cheap deals for groceries. I couldn’t believe I had bought a dozen of instant noodles, which come with a free bowl for every 2 packs purchased and 8 packs of 3-in-1 Milo at RM7.50 (usual price RM9.50) for my family, as if I am preparing for an impending famine. Gawd! I am turning into my sister. Damn si lai.
I hope things would be better in a few more weeks to come. For the time being – I hope I don’t screw up people’s names.. there are hundreds of people in my office alone. One big family. I hope to be a part of this big family soon.
Gawd... I miss the Public Bank nasi lemak!!

it seems to me that the advantages of your new job outweigh any possible obstacles that you’re currently facing now. i believe everything will turn out alright real soon. it’s alright to be a si lai, in my point of view. that’s just another way of being a smart consumer.
